You can invite someone to the table, but you can’t make them eat. Although we may try, we can’t make others hungry. Hunger is a choice. It drives people to work harder than the rest, take painful steps, ask hard questions and keep grinding once they’re tasting victory.

Along with being a husband, dad, pastor and Lead Creative at Stay Forth Designs one of the greatest privileges I get is to walk alongside leaders as a coach. Before calling myself a coach I had been coaching for years, but I had no language for it. Now I get the joy of coaching business leaders, church leaders and non-profit leaders to gain traction in their careers and relationships. I’ve watched murky issues crystalize and leaders find hope again when they realized they were no longer stuck in the mud. Stressed leaders are getting their weekends back, reclaiming family time, clarifying their calling and producing better work. Our Stay Forth Designs coaching team is hearing a bunch of stories of leaders turning their lives around through coaching!

Coaching has been around for a long time, and it’s not going away any time soon. In fact, I believe it’s gaining steam, and here’s why.

Our shifting world. We live in an increasingly complex world where career change is frequent, professional lines are blurred, and more people are functioning as contractors. People need help navigating these complexities.

Scarcity of mentors. People are looking for others to help them make wise decisions. In ages past we would find the village elders to help us, but silos and cultural fractures have limited access to intergenerational relationships. There is a massive lack of mentors today!

Lack of neutral voices. Leaders are always telling me, “everyone in my life wants something from me”. A coach is one person who doesn’t need anything from you. They are there to help you make the next right step, and they can come in without bias.

Desire for experienced guides. Many leaders find themselves in positions they’ve never had experience in, and they are searching for others who understand their playing field. Books are great, but we need relationships.

Information bloating AND relational hunger. We’re simultaneously getting tired of sorting through heaps of information and hunting for significant relationships. Coaching helps people cut right to the point in an ongoing relationship.

The wisdom of community. Most people inherently understand the potential to make exponentially wiser decisions in the presence of others. Coaching is a way to do that.

Focus on health. I believe we’re en route to a health revolution among leaders today. In nearly every sphere I am watching people who simply aren’t willing to shipwreck their priorities just to succeed in their career. I believe this desire for balance paves the way for coaching that focuses on both leader health and leader impact. Yes, I believe it’s possible to find both!
